The Decision

The thinking went like this:

“…It’d be great to travel to Brazil with Leonel and his family… But flying all the way there for only two weeks would be a waste of time…. I hate my job, perhaps this is a chance to escape…. but I’ve got no money… hang on maybe I could volunteer… wow I’d really love to do that…. but will my doctor say I’m OK to go?…  Cripes he’s fine with it!… OK I’m going to book my flights…. Booked, 20th June!…. Oh wow, what have I done!!!”

The reality has had a week or two to sink in now.  I made the above decision within a matter of days; and in fact booked the flights as soon as I got home from my consultants’ offices.  It’s the way I operate.  Make a decision, then take some action to ensure there is no turning back.  Deal with the consequences later.

Next – what to do during the almost 7-month span I’ll be down in Central America?  After researching a number of volunteer agencies and locations I have decided on the following programme: .  I chose this because it seems very well organised, they work with a number of very reputable charitable organisations worldwide, and the programme seems to make an effort to really train their workers with skills that can be put to good use.

There is only one trainee position available on this expedition and I somehow managed to nab it! I’ve paid my dosh and now I’m going I’m alternately excited and pretty nervous.  There seems so much to do, and of course I’m still juggling this with a full-time job, where the pressure is piling on as the recession bites deeper.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is going to be the hardest and most exciting time of my life, and at the end of it I’m going to emerge stronger, leaner, fitter, tanner and a better person!  Only time will tell.

Hi Jess, glad you are getting into the swing of things. Its sounds great, but not for me. When I go on my bike trip, I’ll be running over endangered species on my Harley!
    Keep well.
    Big Al.
